I’m a political scientist who developed a passion for the ancient world. As a result, I’m now in my second PhD. I apply political concepts and social theory to the study of the ancient Near East. I read and interpret ancient documents to use them as primary sources.
This newsletter revolves around the liberal arts. I think and write as a Christian — a Christian worldview and tradition is my starting point. I’m seeking a new model for higher education — while many colleges are being shut down, there are new, exciting, initiatives out there. These are interesting times, yet the question of the role of education is often ignored. In this newsletter, I’ll be reflecting on this question and also pointing to resources that try to address it.
I’m also seeking a better place for the study of ancient languages and cultures in this new model. The history and texts of the past have an intrinsic value. While my background is in Assyriology, I’ll be discussing many ways in which the study of ancient languages and cultures can be incorporated into a new way of doing higher education.
Sou um cientista político apaixonado pelo mundo antigo. Em meu programa atual de doutoramento, aplico conceitos políticos e teoria social a fenômenos e eventos do Próximo Oriente antigo (ou Oriente Médio). Eu leio e interpreto documentos antigos, utilizando-os como fontes primárias.
Esta publicação gira em torno das Artes Liberais. Penso e escrevo como cristão. Uma visão de mundo e tradição cristã é o meu ponto de partida. Busco um novo modelo para a educação superior. Nos EUA, muitas faculdades têm sido fechadas, mas há novas iniciativas interessantísimas emergindo agora.
Entretanto, o papel e meta da educação são temas frequentemente ignorados, mesmo pelos novos modelos. São tempos interessantes para refletir a respeito dessa questão. Isso eu farei na minha publicação, por meio de artigos e outros recursos e indicações de leituras.
Busco, também, um melhor lugar para o estudo das línguas e culturas da antiguidade nesse novo modelo. A história e os textos do passado têm um valor intrínseco. Embora a minha disciplina seja a Assiriologia propriamente dita, discutirei como o estudo de línguas e culturas antigas em geral pode e deve compor um novo formato de educação superior.
